Baked Cinnamon Apples with Oat Crumble
These baked cinnamon apples have a buttery oat topping and a soft fruit base. Baking in a small dish keeps the juices around the apples instead of letting them dry out on a wide tray. It is a simple dessert that does not need pastry or a mixer.
Yield: 4. Timing: Prep 15 minutes; baking 30–40 minutes. Times are approximate; follow the cooking cues below.
Ingredients
- 4 medium apples
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 40 g rolled oats
- 40 g plain flour
- 35 g brown sugar
- 40 g cold butter, diced
- 2 tablespoons water
Step-by-step instructions
- Heat the oven to 190°C / 375°F. Peel the apples if desired, remove cores and slice into pieces about 1 cm thick. Toss with lemon juice and cinnamon in a small baking dish. Add the water.
- Mix oats, flour and sugar in a bowl. Rub in the cold butter with your fingertips until the mixture forms uneven crumbs; do not work it into a smooth dough.
- Scatter the crumble evenly over the apples without pressing it down. Bake for 30–40 minutes until the topping is golden and the apples are tender when pierced.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving, since the fruit juices will be very hot. Serve plain or with yogurt or vanilla ice cream.
Tips for a better result
Apple varieties vary in firmness, so check the fruit rather than relying only on the topping color. If the topping browns before the apples soften, loosely cover the dish and continue baking.
Substitutions and common questions
Can I use pears? Firm pears can replace part of the apples; they may soften faster. Can I omit oats? Replace them with the same weight of flour for a different crumb. Contains wheat and milk; oats also need appropriate certification for gluten-free diets.
