Perro Caliente or Colombian hot dog is a grilled or boiled sausage placed in a bun and topped with a variety of ingredients such as pineapple sauce, coleslaw, onions, and sauces like mustard and ketchup.

Ingredients

  • Hot Dog Sausages – 4
  • Hot Dog Buns – 4
  • Pineapple (chopped) – 1 cup
  • Sugar – 2 tbsp
  • Water – 1/4 cup
  • Cabbage (shredded) – 2 cups
  • Mayonnaise – 1/4 cup
  • White Vinegar – 1 tbsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Pepper – to taste
  • Potato Chips (crushed) – 1 cup
  • Onions (chopped) – 1/2 cup
  • Tomatoes (chopped) – 1/2 cup
  • Cheese (shredded or melted, like mozzarella or cheddar) – 1/2 cup
  • Ketchup – to taste
  • Mustard – to taste
  • Mayonnaise – to taste

Instructions

  1. First, prepare the pineapple sauce by combining the pineapple, sugar, and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat until the pineapple is soft and the mixture thickens, about 10-15 minutes. Let it cool, then blend until smooth. Set aside.
  3. To make the coleslaw, mix the shredded cabbage, mayonnaise, white vinegar, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Set aside.
  4. Grill or boil the hot dog sausages according to the packet instructions.
  5. Place each hot dog sausage in a bun.
  6. Top with a generous amount of pineapple sauce and coleslaw.
  7. Add chopped onions and tomatoes.
  8. Sprinkle with crushed potato chips.
  9. Drizzle ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise over the hot dogs.
  10. Finally, sprinkle with shredded or melted cheese.
